National Budget 2008-09: Challenges and Response

A special pre-budget seminar on “National Budget 2008-09: Challenges and Response” was organized by Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) on 9 April, 2008. Dr. A.B. Mirza Md. Azizul Islam, Honourable Advisor for Finance and Planning, Caretaker Government was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, Chairman Regulatory Reform Commission and Former Advisor Caretaker Government, Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud, Chairman PKSF and Former Advisor, Caretaker Government and Dr. Mahabub Hossain, Executive Director, BRAC and former Director General, BIDS were present as special guests. Dr. Quazi Shahabuddin, Director General, BIDS chaired the seminar. A number of papers covering different aspects of the coming Budget were presented in the seminar by researchers of the Institute. These included domestic resource mobilization, government borrowing from the banking system, regional differences in development, support to agriculture, food production, nutrition and prices, social protection strategy and quality of education.
